Scholarship Background

The Anna V. Waters Scholarship was established by Cheryl Waters-Hassan to honor the memory and legacy of Anna V. Waters (1918 – 2006), who for most of her life lived, worked, and raised her family in Baltimore. A nurse by profession, she consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic. She instilled this work ethic in her children, which has helped them lead productive professional lives. Ms. Waters believed in “doing for self” and was committed to education for all young people.

Every child is born with innate ability. That ability can reveal itself in ways that do not always fit the traditional mold of schooling. We believe that all of our young people deserve the opportunity to have access to post-secondary education.

That’s why the Anna V. Waters Scholarship was founded in 2010. Our funds support African-American students with a 2.0-2.9 grade point average who demonstrate their desire to pursue higher education.

We work each day to honor the legacy of Anna V. Waters, a tenacious woman with an unflinching work ethic. Ms. Waters instilled in her children a sense of “doing for self” to lead productive lives in their communities. This is the fundamental tenet in our efforts to support young African-American students.

Many financial scholarships are rooted in how a student looks on paper, but grades don’t tell the whole story. We are proud to invest in students who may not have conventional markers of success and who need someone to believe in them and their potential. All students deserve the opportunity to learn and pursue their goals and dreams without financial barriers. We hope that you will join us by investing in our scholars’ future.

Since its founding over a decade ago, the Anna V. Waters Scholarship has awarded African-American students with a “C” average nearly $60,000. These funds, to which they may not have otherwise had access, have helped dozens of students complete their education and become contributing members of our communities.

We invite you to join this village of support.
